About

Elii is an architecture studio based in Madrid and founded in 2006 by Uriel Fogué Herreros, Eva Giles Lopesino and Carlos Palacios Rodriguez. They make an extensive use of time based media to document their projects. Their work deals with a broad number of fields and scales. And it couldn't be otherwise since, as Uril Fogué Herreros stated, it is easier to show Elii's work in video than with regular pictures. Watching a video like "067 Didomestic" is a good way to measure to what extent Fogué Herreros' sentence is true. For "067 Didomestic" the studio collaborated with Miguel de Guzmán's Imagen Subliminal to show the solution conceived by Elii for the renovation of an attic in Madrid. In order to attain a full spatial optimisation, the three designers imagined a house rich in moving parts, resulting in hammocks, drawers and tables popping out from the walls as needed. How to properly display this? Well, if the house is time-based, the a time-based representation is the perfect thing: Miguel de Guzmán staged a normal daily routine in the Didomestic house and showed what Elii mean by saying that "every house is a theater". The same concept of Didomestic is described in a short cartoon where Elii came up with a paper theater representing the house. The plus is that the paper theater can be downloaded and built at home: every house will have a theater. This idea says a lot about the interest of Elii arquitectos in DIY kits. That's the concept behind El Ranchito project, described in Miguel de Guzman's "072 Potlatch!". The project is a piece of Elii's ephemeral architecture: Potlatch! is a modular working space that can be pulled around by bike and freely arranged. It is conceived as a do-it-yourself kit that includes everything is needed to have a productive day, even a plant and a hammock (as the video points it out, a nap every now and then is essential to a fecund activity). The interest of Elii for DIY construction kits and the collaboration with Imagen Subliminal is also behind "066 JF Kit House": accompanied by the voice and music of Jane Fonda workout videos, the model of a house is put together one piece after another.
