Sliced Porosity Block

Spirit of Space

A public space contained by a cluster of five towers in Chengdu.

The short film by Spirit of Space - following a frequent collaboration between the video makers and architect Steven Holl - emerges for a great awareness of the designed environments and for the effective way to describe architecture and spaces, involving both the architectural profession and the wider public audience.

The camera alternates between lingering on the details of the complex - as if to take pictures from fixed perspectives - and slowly moving within the spaces of this new metropolitan public space. The video outlines the primary features of the project, such as a use of the public spaces focused on the human scale, the combination between art and architecture and the porosity of the block, which is all narrated in the transition from the metropolitan surroundings to the internal spaces of the square.

The mixed-use complex in the center of Chengdu, which comprises a cluster of five towers around a public plaza "without any building being iconic", as public space - shaped by the surrounding architecture - is the real protagonist of the whole project.
