MEGALOMANIA

Factory Fifteen

An immersive dystopic scenario where the city is eternal construction site.

"Megalomania" puts forward an extreme reflection of the appearance of progress in the contemporary city, in terms of architecture and infrastructure. The short animation focuses on the ambiguities of constant urban modifications, which could be read as both intensive development and dramatic decay.

The whole of London is perceived and narrated through the metaphor of an eternal construction site, where the built environment is explored as an unfinished or broken labyrinth. For the vision of this dystopic urban scenario, Jonathan Gales and the architectural animation studio Factory Fifteen took inspiration from the indeterminate geometries within Giovanni Battista Piranesi's drawings for the fictional architectures in the Carceri plates.

In the movie by Factory Fifteen, new architectures in, around and stacked on top of others are animated using 3D CGI technology mixed with some 2.5D sequences. The virtual camera movements allow a number of different points of views, such as impossible perspectives elevated above the city and also the experiential perspective of an individual.
