Casta Luna

Eduardo Arroyo, Simone Muscolino

A community of cloned buildings moves and chooses its favorite place.

The functional elements of the city are the subjects of the story narrated by No.MAD Arquitectos about the imaginary region of Casta Luna, a fictional territory proposed to muse on possible urban scenarios and the process for a programmed "nature-urbanity" for Catalonia in the period from 2002 to 2006.

After the analysis of data, information, abstract infographics and diagrams, the video presents the interactions of a group of tower-shaped structures called "clones" - ideal collectors of the functions of each city block – which show the multi-layered and relational nature of urban-territorial developments.

Eduardo Arroyo and No.MAD Arquitectos chose the video - even if at the time of the production (2001) the early digital effects only allowed a simple representation - as a tool to introduce the importance of superseding the old linear and one-dimensional models of urban planning (hierarchical development, zoned growth and monofunctional regulation) with the multi-layered definitions of a new flexible logic, with which to conceive interlinked "territories of crossing", a virtual hyper-place “rather than any desire for an hypothetical, essential, cohesive and single ideal place”.

"Casta Luna" is part of "HiperCatalunya" (2003), a research project and a publication by Metàpolis and the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia - based on a territorial study of the Catalan region - that involved the collective participation of 25 architecture firms from different countries.
