About

Bjarke Ingels started BIG | Bjarke Ingels Group in 2005 after co-founding PLOT in 2001 with Julien De Smedt and working at OMA in Rotterdam. Today BIG is led by 12 partners. The practice is based in Copenhagen and New York and is involved in a large number of projects worldwide. The group is renowned for its design open to the influence of multicultural exchange, global economical flows and communication technologies that all together require new ways of architectural and urban organization. BIG is extremely confident with video and often adopts this medium. Some videos introduce the design concept of a project, explained by Bjarke Ingels while modelling a virtual maquette on an interactive table; this is the case of the "8 House" and the "Vancouver City" videos. In addition, BIG often produces short animations illustrating main volumes and qualities of buildings in relationship with the sourronding. Still other videos represent completed buildings as they are used, such as the "Maritime Museum". Besides these works mainly dealing with the presentation of projects, BIG's buildings have also been extensively investigated by filmmakers. Kaspar Astrup Schroeder chose the Mountain Dwellings as the stage for the freerunners he filmed in "My Playground", and Bêka Films was recently commissioned by BIG to show the daily life in the 8-House in the film "The Infinite Happiness".
